Left - Major-General William Earle (1833-85)

A great
Liverpool military hero. 

He lived at Allerton Tower and met his end after
being attacked by arabs as he made his way up the Nile in an attempt to rescue Gordon of Khartoum. 

His body was brought back to Liverpool for burial.      The statue, by Charles Bell Birch, was unveiled by the famous
General Wolseley in 1887.
