had some fantastic images of Liverpool presented in the
opening credits....
There was one particular image of St Georges
Hall that iinspired
me me and I was
determined to get this aerial vantage point.
Before all the alterations in
Lime St Station there was a door to a balcony and when I
found it, it was like finding a “pot of gold”!
The image above was taken
on print film.

Techniques Used And
Processing Decisions
Matching
tones and staying neutral were some of the biggest lessons I
was taught in photographic education,
I also read in magazines about how rules are there to be
broken and artistic license.
In conclusion there are many images here which are
neutral to the colours of the surroundings and also
“creative” comparisons that produce warmer tones.
There are crops of images, focusing on specific details
close up alongside the original compositions.
In actual fact there are no
compulsory
rules
in photography (only guidelines), as photography is a
creative subjective artistic medium.

14th Earl of Derby (1799-1869; Prime Minister)
Like many of his contemporaries, the 14th Earl was educated
at Eton and then Oxford and was clearly destined for a
political career.
In 1822, two years after leaving Oxford, he was elected M.P.
for Stockbridge, later moving to represent Preston, Windsor
and then North Lancashire.
In 1830 he entered office for the first time, becoming
chief secretary for Ireland.
He was responsible for introducing a number of reforms in
Ireland, in the areas of education, transport, tithes, the
electoral franchise and so on.
By 1833 he had been moved to the Colonial Office, where he
was responsible for drawing up the Abolition of Slavery
Bill.
After a period out of office, Lord Stanley (as he was styled
until succeeding his father as 14th Earl of Derby in 1851)
returned to government in 1841 as Peel’s Colonial Secretary.
In 1844 he was elevated to the House of Lords with the title
‘Lord Stanley of Bickerstaffe’.
He resigned from government in 1845 in protest at the
proposed repeal of the Corn Laws, and became leader of the
Protectionist Conservatives.

The Warm or Neutral Debate?
Composition Choice, Closer Or Wider?
Its all a matter of personal taste
Below are several images of the Chandelier at The Concert
Room inside St Georges Hall, three images are cropped from
the same photograph.
I have cropped them differently, also the closer images are
processed with both warmer and neutral tones, to add variety
and perhaps a mood of a bygone age.
I wanted to highlight the intricate details of the
Chandellier, hence the closer crop.
The wider image of the chandellier hanging depicts the
ornate ceiling design (3rd image down).

The final image is a horizontal

Two images presented, one warm in tone and one
neutral, depicting the ornate beautiful ceiling of The

St George's Hall At Night
Warm Or Neutral?
One Photograph, but 2 images of a Side Angle of St Georges
Hall taken at Night featuring Radio City Tower (formerly St
John’s beacon) on the left.
Both images
have been processed differently with neutral and stronger
colours.
I believe a traditionalist would prefer the version that has
the lighter/more neutral
colours, shown just below.

I raise awareness for
Blood Cancer UK whenever and however I can, by tagging the
charity with popular subject matters, that add variety to my
work.
In 2009 I photographed the Spring Ball and
in 2013 I used the Concert room as a backdrop for a portrait

The Spring Ball
included BBC’s Strictly Champion (2008) Camilla Dallerup and
her professional Dance Partner Ian Waite.
The late

made a speech and Liverpool’s

jazz, and classic hits.
It was a

I produced a
portrait shoot in the concert room in 2013, entitled “Pretty
Woman And Liverpool” that raised awareness for Blood Cancer
UK.
The model kindly
posed voluntary and I had been generously given
free use of the Concert Room.
