M People Liverpool Empire 20/10/2013

M People (stylised as MPeople)
are an English dance
music band
that formed in 1990 and achieved success throughout most of the 1990s.
The name M People is taken from the first letter of the first name of band
member Mike Pickering, who formed the group.
In December 2016, Billboard
magazine ranked
them as the 83rd most successful dance artist of all time.
M People have sold over 11 million records worldwide
Pickering
had
been
a
member
of
Factory
Records dance act Quando
Quango, but became more noted as one of the original DJs
at The
Haçienda.
Paul Heard was a member of acid
jazz band Ace of Clubs, and Shovell had previously been
in the collective Natural
Life.
The original plan had been to have a roster of different singers for different
songs but having been spotted by Pickering and Heard,
Heather Small became the distinctive vocalist of the group.

She had been in the English Soul band Hot
House, which had released a number of critically
acclaimed records without
scoring any major success
Heather Small (born
20 January 1965) is an English soul singer who was the lead singer of the band M
People and later became a solo artist. Her debut solo
album was Proud, released in 2000. She was also a contestant in
the British television show Strictly
Come Dancing in 2008.
Small, who grew up on a West
London council estate,joined her first
group, Hot
House,
while she was still a teenager.
She was the studio singer voice of the re-recorded version of UK number 1 single
"Ride
on Time" from Italo house band Black
Box.
After a chance meeting with Manchester DJ Mike
Pickering, formerly of Quando
Quango,
Small and her distinctive voice helped to sell over 10 million albums worldwide
singing with the group M
People.
They had considerable success with songs such as "Moving
On Up", "One Night In Heaven" and "Search
for the Hero".In 1997, Small
performed on the "Perfect
Day" record alongside a wide range of
artists including Tom
Jones and Lou
Reed. The song was the official 1997 Children
in Need charity release. It sold over a
million copies and was the UK's number one single for three weeks, in two
separate spells.
In 1998, after the release of M People's Best
Of album,
Small and the band took some time off to pursue solo projects.
