Liverpool's Royal Albert Dock - My Continied Inspirations, Surrounding Area, Landmarks Near And Far
Atmospheres and light patterns
Taken in the still of the night,
In and around an architectural masterpiece!
Above The Photograph was taken facing The Merseyside Maritime Museum, reflected the Canning Half-tied Dock.
The Wheel Of Liverpool is recorded in the distant right behind the dock wall and the Pumphouse is on the Left of the picture.
Vessels can just be seen berthed in the water, a smaller vessel is In the middle of the water, closer to the wall, taller vessels are nearer the Pumphouse
and their masts are highlighted.
On this shoot I was assisted by my chaperone who drove me to the destination and set up my equipment.
My Camera was mounted on a tripod, with a cable release that would “take” the
photograph,
thus
ensuring I would avoid camera shake from during a long exposure.
A smaller aperture of F16 combined with a wider focal length 15mm (50mm is
standard focal length), ensured I would gain maximum depth, detail, and
sharpness throughout the picture, which is why the lettering spelling out
“Merseyside Maritime Museum” is clearly readable.
By letting in less light through one part of the camera, meant that I needed to
allow more light in through the shutter resulting in a time of 24seconds before
the picture was taken. It was challenging to capture the photograph at the right
moment avoiding a night breeze that would of “blurred” the reflection in the
water
The longer exposure helped me record the movement of The Wheel Of Liverpool
I chose an Iso speed rating of 100iso to gain maximum image quality.
Above
The dramatic contrast of tones in the scene made me take this picture.
I used the bending/curved wall on the right to “draw” the eye into the
photograph and the nearby safety railing was used as a frame.
Another vessel (has a code H.L.D 6512), is far more visible and provides the
compositions main subject matter.
The sky is dark, yet not black, there
are subtle blue
tones and dark gray/black clouds which contrast with the brighter tones in the
overall image.
Above Taken in 2016 “A Portrait Of Night And Light”.
The surrounding walls of the Royal Albert Dock were used to frame the image, a
gap in the walls frames the “Three Graces” and Museum Of Liverpool in the
distance.
At the processing stage I brought out the reflections and highlights in the water, to give the photograph an appearance like a painting.
The lighting scheme
highlighted the vessels and the surrounding area
